The solemnity of the Holy Trinity tackles the principal and hardest mystery of our faith by showing us that God is a Community of love and life.
The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are in this timeless, everlasting relationship of eternal sharing of love as well as the Source of all life.
As mind-blowing as this reality already sounds, through Baptism and full Communion in the Second Person, the Son Jesus, from all eternity, the Holy Trinity has decreed to include all of us in this endless Life-giving and sharing of Love.
Today, we are also invited to reflect on how our existence within the Holy Trinity, our daily life in all its facets, is supposed to be lived out for our true happiness and God’s glory.
God’s light, guidance, and protection are manifested in his Creation and even more clearly in his law (Ten Commandments) and are perfected by his new commandment of loving each other as Jesus loved us on the cross.
The more we learn to trust God in his infinite love for us, the more we desire to live by his law of love; and the more we find genuine happiness while longing to be sealed for all eternity in his loving, endless embrace.
Our life within the Holy Trinity benefits also from the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness. Galatians 5:22
And it is, as well, aided by the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord.
All this availability of grace should be incredibly uplifting.
However, the solemnity of the Holy Trinity is not only a renewed invitation to bask in that divine Communion but also to accept humbly the impossibility of wrapping our puny, little minds around the unsolvable Mystery that God is, and will forever be.
Alas, as soon as we lose sight of this most comforting reality in which we live through the blood of Christ, we feel affected by an alternate reality which has been created slowly by political correctness and wokeness and which is in opposition to the awesome reality created by God’s Wisdom (cf. Proverbs 8:22-31).
In disbelief, day in and day out, we notice that we are attacked from all sides by preposterous ideologies and appalling statements that do violence to common sense.
Worse yet; we found out that if we resist this relentless craziness, the violence increases exponentially, and we are threatened by “cancellation” and, possibly, the denial of our livelihood.
In our bewilderment, instinctively, we place our head between the palms of our hands and wonder what is going on and how sanity and common sense can be restored.
Witnessing our bewilderment, St. Paul reminds us that we have peace with God through Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand. Romans 5:1-2
Conscious of living within the Holy Trinity, we ought to remember that we are meant to stand in the grace granted us by the blood of Christ.
Yes, by divine decree we are called to stand, not to cower and be crushed by the alternate reality which a godless world has created to besiege, control, and rule us.
Tell me of a single instance in the Gospel in which our Lord Jesus, with whom we share the life of the Holy Trinity, cowered, and was knocked to the ground by the forces of darkness confronting him.
He was always intentionally direct, brazen, even irreverent, a rabid iconoclast of a stagnant religiosity.
There is a long list of “You were told, but I say…” in the gospel of Matthew.
Then, again from the same gospel: “Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. Matthew 10:34
And the gospel of Luke projects even a more imposing figure of a person consumed by the divine mission he received by the Father: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three. Luke 12:49-52
My friends in Christ, there is a choice that we must make today anew; and it must be for the rest of our life on earth.
Actually, our Lord makes our choice clearer for us: Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Matthew 12:30
Think: if we let God be pushed out of our lives, there would be no distinction between good and evil, right, and wrong.
The establishment of that alternate, godless reality has already decided for us what is right and what is wrong for all those who toe its line.
Think: if we submit to this ideological tyranny, we forfeit all the light, guidance, protection, freedom, trust, and longing for him that God wishes to give us.
Neither would we enjoy the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness.
And the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord would lose all their value.
Only if we decide to continue living within the Holy Trinity, enjoying full access to the fruits of the Spirit and his gifts can we implement the new commandment of loving each other the way Jesus loved us from the cross, contribute to the betterment of this world and find lasting happiness, all the while giving the Holy Trinity all the glory that is due.
